Thanks Simon! I actually started creating my own alaia as of last year. It was a fun process and, although I haven’t finished because the college where I teach moved me out of my work space, I still have the foundations of a cool-looking alaia board. I hope to make a bunch in the future. The question is: will I ever have the skills to actually stand up on one??!!! I heard they are extremely difficult.
Jeez, they are grizzled sooks aren’t they? They are the one’s “looking back to go forward”; using their past deeds and tastes to justify their “pedigree” which they think gives them the option of judging others. In fact, I would class them in the kook category because they have lost or never had an essential element of surfing. Many people riding old and hybrid and experimental craft tend to be just having some FUN … sheesh. I would have added extra extra chilli to the meal to spice up their tired and boring and old opinions and ways.
what a relief to see rob machado finally smile in the last few seconds of the footage! i wonder how many smiles actually happened and how many got edited out. hmmm…
there are days when i absolutely want to make an ass out of myself and attempt to craft and ride my own alaia because they are so simple and beautiful and the surf looks like it wouldn’t be fun on much else. it’s all relative, right?
It’s a fun undertaking, Dina! I’ve really enjoyed slowly putting mine together. It’s not finished, but when it is I have no problem embarrassing myself on one out there! (ha)
Send ’em over, pete. I have got their measure. I will introduce them to the politburo (fellow grizzled old sooks). They will get on just fine … no, really. lol
