Australia Day? or Invasion/Survival Day?
Many people will celebrate today what is called “Australia Day”, for many it is particularly marked by waving of flags, painting the flag on one’s body and heading to the beach for a BBQ and drinks. However, some people want Australia Day to be moved from January 26, the date chosen to commemorate the landing of the first fleet (English) on Australian shores in 1788.
Australia Day, January 26 isolates the original indigenous peoples.
To most indigenous peoples it (Australia Day) actually reflects the day on which their world came crashing down. Some people call it ‘Survival Day’ or ‘Invasion Day’.
