Emergency crews are working to assess extensive damage in the north Queensland towns of Tully, Mission Beach, Cardwell, Silkwood and Innisfail after category five Cyclone Yasi roared ashore overnight.
Buildings were destroyed, roofs were ripped off houses, and trees were shredded as the monster storm hit the communities with destructive wind gusts of up to 285kph at about midnight.
Queensland Premier Anna Bligh says there have been no reports of any deaths or serious injuries so far. But she says fire and rescue crews report that 90 per cent of the buildings in Tully’s CBD have been extensively damaged and there is also widespread destruction in Cardwell, further south.
This morning the cyclone was heading inland towards Georgetown and Charters Towers and had been downgraded from a category five to a category two system, but higher-than-normal tides and large waves continued to threaten areas between Port Douglas and Ayr.
