thanks Noah, this brings back memories from a visit I made about 6 years ago. The insides of the houses are so cosy – really noticeable, and you see a glimpse of it here in the clip too.
I was introduced to an astounding one-pot meal – lamb neck or shanks, a cabbage, salt and peppercorns. Simmer in enough water to cover for 4-5 hours, and eat along with dark ‘old’ beer and aquavit. Unforgettably good, especially after that water, better get it on early in the day because you won’t be out in the water that long.
Thanks, Simon! I am very jealous of your trip to Norway. I lived in Europe for roughly four years, but never had the opportunity to get to Norway in spite of a long-time interest in the country….the fjords, the mountains, the properly run country(ha). I have constantly thought about building a Norwegian style home here in the U.S. So extremely welcoming and simple. Will have to try the recipe as well! Have a good one.
Norway is a terrific place, lots to see and learn, gracious and quietly friendly people too. You won’t regret trying that recipe Noah, steamd spuds work a treat on the side. Classic simple hearty dish – give thanks for the protein and enjoy 😉
PS – check the fab efficient houses (hus) and grass-roof ‘hut’ (hytte) here http://www.nordbohus.no/ – a friend’s family started this business in 1970s – when u build it i visit, promise
Awesome! I love the huts with grass roofs. Here is the website I am using for inspiration for my future home. I want to do rammed earth, cedar shingles and either a slate or grass roof. They’re from Brittany, France. http://embrunsdherbe.blogspot.com/
have you ever seen the Bent Hammer film Kitchen Stories set in a Norwegian farm house? A slow paced but quirky tale about qualative research. The interiors in this clip reflect the comforts of shelter in a cold climate, the warmth of light, the resonance of wood and polish. everything seems to have a patina. even passing the barn-like dwellings and seeing smoke chug from the chimney evokes a never ending stew.

Then, to put it all together I want to do a completely edible yard like this woman, Rosalind Cressy. http://www.rosalindcreasy.com/edible-landscaping-basics/
I think it is possible if I do much of the work andmkeep it simple and small. One day… Just planning for now.
hey great one – I had to use the page translate from my frenemy google
