One year on, Christmas Island

A memorial service will be held on Christmas Island this morning to mark 12 months since a boat carrying asylum seekers smashed up on rocks, killing up to 50 people.

Early on the morning of December 15, the Indonesian fishing vessel, with about 100 mostly Iranian and Iraqi passengers on board, was tossed by wild seas onto rocks on the shore of Christmas Island.

Forty-two on board were rescued, and 35 have since been granted permanent residency in Australia, including three orphans.
