Last night I was out of myself.
If I were that way again,
I could finish this poem, but I am not.
My poet-self is a protective pawn put before the king
who is Shams,
who changes every being to an ocean
and every body to a coral reef.
* Shams al-Din Mohammad (1185-1248) was a Persian Muslim, who is credited as the spiritual instructor of Mewlānā Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Balkhi, also known as Rumi. “Shams” means “Sun” in Persian.
